The RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) has been the gold standard for treating acute injuries for many years. However, new research suggests a more effective approach: PEACE & LOVE. This modern framework promotes optimal healing while considering both immediate care and long-term recovery.
So, What Does PEACE & LOVE Stand For?
Immediately after an injury, follow PEACE:
- Protect: Avoid movements and activities that aggravate the injury in the first few days.
- Elevate: Keep the injured area above heart level to minimise swelling.
- Avoid Anti-Inflammatories: Medications like ibuprofen can slow down the body’s natural healing process.
- Compress: Use bandages to limit excessive swelling.
- Educate: Learn about your injury and avoid unnecessary treatments that may delay recovery.
After the initial PEACE phase, support long-term healing with LOVE:
- Load: Gradually reintroduce movement and weight-bearing exercises to rebuild strength. Be guided by your body’s response to movements.
- Optimism: A positive mindset can improve recovery outcomes.
- Vascularisation: Light activity can increase blood flow promote healing.
- Exercise: Controlled movements help restore function and prevent re-injury.
Why is PEACE & LOVE is Better than RICE?
RICE (particularly the rest and ice components) may actually slow healing by reducing blood flow and delaying tissue healing. While PEACE & LOVE encourages active recovery, movement, and positive mindset, which align more appropriately with modern rehabilitation science.
Through employing PEACE & LOVE, you’re not only treating the injury, you’re also supporting a faster, stronger, and more complete recovery.
How Can an Exercise Physiologist Assist?
After the initial PEACE phase, as Exercise Physiologists we can help implement LOVE by designing tailored movement, strength, and mobility programs to restore function and prevent re-injury.
We assess muscle weakness, movement patterns, and biomechanics to ensure the injured area regains full strength without unwanted setbacks. We also promote education, behaviour modification and motivation, helping individuals stay optimistic and committed to recovery.
Unlike passive treatments, we take an active approach backed by scientific evidence, ensuring that rehabilitation is tailored to the individual’s needs.
